Mike Schwartz raised a few eyebrows when he went on this rant against porn and gays at last weeks conservative Value Voters Summit in DC. Schwartz is Chief of Staff to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). Some of you might remember Coburn as the man who protested when NBC aired Schindler's List and who once allegedly sterilized a patient of his (that's right, he's also an MD) against her will.

For those of who you don't have time to watch the whole clip, Schwartz explains that the homophobic instincts of young boys is reasonable and correct and that all porn turns men gay. For those of you that do have time to watch it all, what's it like being unemployed?

Judge Awards $63,000 to Overdose Victim

Our north-of-the-border correspondent tipped us off to this strange story from Vancouver. It seems a Canadian man was accidentally overdosed with Ketamine a few years back, and even though it seems the judge didn't think the trip caused the man any serious damage, the unwitting tripper was awarded $63,000.

The tripper, one Bradley Weafer of Campbell River, B.C., was given 500 mg of Ketamine in five minutes. He claimed to have had an out-of-body experience during which he saw God. I wish we could bring Canadian-style health care to the U.S. Normally, when we want K we have to pony up $25 or at least fingerbang a bear.

MSM's Love Affair with Pot

Well, it's September again. Backyard weed harvests are in full tilt and, as students head back to school, we can only imagine that sales of 6-foot Graffix bongs are through the roof. Three news stories this month have caught our red and dilated eyes and suggest that pot is going (even more) mainstream.

Adam Tschorn of the LA Times covered the inaugural THC Expo at the LA Convention Center and found that pot has supplanted alcohol as the inebriant of choice for just about everyone. We particularly enjoyed his guide to designer stoner paraphernalia.

Fortune Magazine, not exactly a liberal rag, puts Mary Louise Parker on its cover. Inside, senior editor Roger Parloff speculates that the end of pot prohibition is near and tries to put a price tag on all the profit.

Over at Slate, Daniel Engber gets a little uncomfortable when his mom asks him to score some pot, then relaxes a little when he realizes that Americans over 50 are smoking much more weed.

Hey guys, remember back in 2008? The Beijing Olympics? Change we can believe in? Vampire Weekend was the soundtrack of the summer, at least until TV on the Radio dropped Dear Science. It seems that VW are up to their old tricks again, just announcing their January release, Contra, and finally answering everyone's questions about the collar-popped, American Apparelesque blonde that's been popping up around the intertubes. The album hits American stores on January 12. If you can't wait, here's VW doing "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" and some Devendra Banhart for good measure.

Drug War fail

We almost missed this little nugget from alternet last week, but thanks to be God for Tramadol. It kept us up late into the night scouring the web. It seems that the U.S. government has been busying itself by dropping loads of Monsanto's herbicide "Round Up", or glyphosate, all over the hemisphere in hopes of destroying crops of drugs. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, this has been poisoning people.

It seems that Argentinean embryologist Andrés Carrasco told a Buenos Aires newspaper that he was attacked by thugs after his research concluded that glyphosate could be impacting fetuses. Monsanto, by the way, has been involved in multiple cases of scientific fraud and disseminating misinformation.

A strange twist in all of this? Farmers have succeeded in hybridizing a coca plant that's impervious to glyphosate, and these farmers are actually being aided by the U.S. who takes out the competition. Just goes to show you that there's no problem the U.S. government can't fuck up.
